Sur de Bolivar is a community hidden deep in the mountains under Santa Rosa de Sur. This area in Northern Colombia is very remote and has poor road access, and has been a home territory for the FARC, illegal mining operations, and illicit drug production. In the early 2000’s the Colombian
government made deals with the FARC and cracked down on illegal operations, allowing for the coffee producers to have easier access to the ports to sell their coffee.
To get to Sur de Bolivar community you have to take a long boat ride up the Magdelena river, followed by a three hour drive out to Serrania de San Lucas. Our friends at Boot Coffee in Santa Rosa, CA had started a project in Sur de Bolivar (funded by the USAID, United States Agency for International Development) to promote specialty coffee production. This is Sur de Bolivar’s first major harvest to make it to the United States.
