The first thing to know about Jorge is that he’s become a true leader in coffee processing, through curious experimentation. We lovingly think of him as a poster boy for the switched-on younger generation of Colombian smallholder coffee farmers! Since he stumbled into selling coffee to ASOPEP a few years back, he’s taken advantage of every single opportunity to learn at his disposal. He’s been hungry, caterpillar-style, devouring knowledge of processing, roasting, brewing, and organic farming.
He’s a dream “package”. (His nickname is “sorbete”, meaning exactly that.) We frequently pick and choose from a producer’s microlots and place some in a regional blend and keep some apart, but this coffee is a 100% caturra lot. Jorge manages his farm in a way that we think of as being “beyond organic”- he sprays a fertilizing spray on his trees monthly, mixing Super Magro, worm leachate (the dark liquid that leaks out of a worm composting bin- it’s water released from the cells of decomposing scraps),and micro-organisms- he makes all of these products on his farm (and also sells them to his friends and neighbors so that they can farm organically as well).
